Sumatran Amber looks brown at low light levels, but it is distinctively red in bright illumination. These pendants are slightly translucent, and show interesting patterns when back illuminated. Sumatran Amber varies in age from a few 10's of millions of years to about 100 million years old.
These pieces have been varnished, as the amber is soft, and the varnish is harder, and gives them a nice shine.
Amber is an organic gemstone derived from fossilized tree resin. Amber is approximately 20-100 millions years old. Most amber is typically found in the Baltic region , while a different variety of amber has recently been discovered in Sumatra, in the South-East Asia. Unlike Baltic amber which may often contain bits of bark, trapped air bubbles, and sometimes insects, Sumatran amber is relatively less included but features dark color areas within its reddish-cognac body that resemble leopard spots.
However, what is more distinct between the two is that Sumatran amber also has an optical feature that displays a reddish hue under incandescent light and a blue fluorescence under UV light. This phenomenon is not observed in Baltic amber.
Sumatran amber is not heated, clarified, or treated.
As with all organic gemstones, do not use harsh chemical cleaners to clean your amber jewelry piece, but rather use mild soap and warm water, only as needed.
Beautiful pendant you can wear to add a statement to any outfit.
Amber is both the name of the material, and in many cases also the color.
Amber is a class of resins from plants that fossilize. There are 5 different amber materials, different colors, different ages, and they are mined in different locations. Generally the lighter yellowish amber is Copalite, a young amber from 100's of years to a few million years. Amber that is darker, and older is found in many locations, mainly in the Baltic, off the coasts of Russia and Poland "Baltic Amber". Dark amber also comes from Sumatra, Indonesia, and other locations. Many amber materials will fluoresce, giving a bluing sheen in bright sunlight or fluorescent light. Some (Sumatran) give a deep red color.

Most pendants do not require any care. Silver, copper, and brass bails need to be polished from time to time. Gold, bronze and nickel bails require almost no care.
