Tiffany Stone is named for its appearance like that of a Tiffany Lamp. Of course, the material is totally different, opalized fluorite mined in the Thomas Range of Mountains in Utah. We have bought some of our material from vendors near the mine, which is heavily guarded. The material has gone up tremendously in price over the past few years, and really great material is getting harder to find. This material was much more expensive than the material we purchased a few years ago.
OPAL FLUORITE (TIFFANY STONE)
These unique “opalized fluorite nodules are only found in Utah, within the “Thomas Range” These nodules are formed by various minerals circulating in subscale underground rivers, and are formed together when they penetrate volcanic tuff layers. These layers consist mostly of various forms of SiOx, mainly quartz, chalcedony, agate and opal. The fluorite nodules vary considerably in total fluorite content which makes thee nodules so interesting, forming a wider variety of aesthetic and colorful patterns within the nodules. The color of the fluorite varies from a light blue to a deep reddish, violet color. Occasionally these nodules have hollow areas (like geodes) that contain either quartz crystals, fluorite crystals, halite opal or a variety of other minerals. One more noteworthy feature of these nodules is they fluoresce a bright green color under short wave violet illumination.
